What is Electrical and Electronics Engineering?
Quick read
- Electrical and electronics engineering covers circuits, power systems, electronics, signal processing, communications and control.
- Growth areas include renewable energy and power electronics, semiconductors and VLSI, and embedded systems.
- Indian ECE and EEE graduates have many specialist master's to choose from abroad.
- UK graduate electrical engineers start around £28,000–£32,000 (Prospects, 2025).
- Projects with hardware, simulation tools and programming strengthen your applications.
Electrical and electronics engineers design the systems that generate and use electricity and process signals: power grids, electric vehicles, chips, sensors, communication networks and control systems.
Master's programmes abroad let BTech EEE and ECE graduates specialise in power and energy, microelectronics, telecommunications, embedded systems or control, often with a research or industry project.

Study Electrical and Electronics Engineering abroad: FAQs
ECE graduate: should I choose electronics or computer science for my master's?
Both are possible. Electronics and embedded systems build on your degree directly; computer science may need extra programming background.
Is VLSI a good specialisation abroad?
Microelectronics programmes exist in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany and elsewhere. Jobs are concentrated in a few regions, so check where the industry is.
Do I need GRE?
Usually not in the UK, Europe or Australia; some Canadian programmes ask for it.
Can I switch to power and renewable energy from ECE?
Often yes, if your degree included circuits and electrical machines. Check the entry subjects.
Are German-taught programmes better?
Many more programmes are taught in German, and German helps with jobs. English-taught master's are still available.
