What is Artificial Intelligence?

Quick read

  • AI degrees cover machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics and AI ethics.
  • Master's in AI usually expect a computer science, engineering or maths degree with programming.
  • Several universities on our list are known for AI research, especially in the UK, Canada, the Netherlands and Germany.
  • UK graduate machine learning engineers start around £33,000–£39,000 (Prospects, 2025).
  • Linear algebra, probability and Python are the foundations to brush up before you start.

Artificial intelligence is the field of building systems that learn from data, understand language and images, and make decisions. Courses go deep into machine learning theory and practice, neural networks and the responsible use of AI.

Some programmes are research-oriented and lead naturally to a PhD; others are applied and include industry projects. Compare the modules and the final project before you apply.

Why study Artificial Intelligence abroad

  • AI research groups

Studying where AI research happens gives you access to specialist electives and research projects.

  • Computing resources

Universities provide GPU clusters and cloud credits that are expensive to access on your own.

  • Responsible AI

Courses abroad increasingly cover AI law and ethics, such as the EU AI Act.

  • Career routes

AI skills are used in tech firms, finance, health, automotive and research labs.

Specialisations you can choose

  • Machine learning
  • Deep learning
  • Natural language processing
  • Computer vision
  • Robotics
  • Reinforcement learning

Study Artificial Intelligence abroad: FAQs

AI or data science: which should I choose?

AI goes deeper into machine learning methods and intelligent systems; data science is broader and more about analysis. If you enjoy maths and building models, AI suits you.

Can I study AI abroad after BCA or BSc?

Yes, if your degree had enough programming and maths and the university accepts three-year degrees. Check entry rules for each course.

Do AI master's need GRE?

Most in the UK, Europe and Australia don't. Some North American programmes do.

Is AI only for research careers?

No. Most graduates work in industry as ML engineers, data scientists or software engineers with AI skills.

What should I learn before starting?

Python, linear algebra, calculus and probability. Online courses in machine learning basics help a lot.
