About the university
The University of Manchester traces its history to 1824, when the Manchester Mechanics' Institute opened to teach science to working people in the world's first industrial city. The modern university was created in 2004 by merging the Victoria University of Manchester with UMIST, and it marked its bicentenary in 2024. It is one of the largest single-site universities in the UK.
Manchester is known for research that changed the world. The first stored-program computer, the 'Baby', ran here in 1948, and graphene was first isolated here in 2004, work that won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics. The university counts 25 Nobel laureates among its past and present staff and students. It is a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive UK universities.
For Indian students the strongest draws are computer science and AI, engineering, business and finance at Alliance Manchester Business School, pharmacy and public health. Most courses sit on one main campus along Oxford Road, a short walk or bus ride from the city centre. Manchester itself is a large, diverse city with a big South Asian community, Curry Mile in Rusholme close to campus and direct flights to India from Manchester Airport.
Entry is competitive. Many master's courses ask for a high first-class or strong 2:1 equivalent and some use staged admissions with fixed decision dates, so applying early matters. The university runs Global Futures Scholarships specifically for students from India at both undergraduate and master's level.
