About the university

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) was founded in 1842 by King Willem II as a Royal Academy to train civil engineers for the Dutch state and its colonies. It is the oldest and largest technical university in the Netherlands, with eight faculties covering engineering, applied sciences, architecture, industrial design and technology policy.

TU Delft is one of Europe's leading engineering schools, ranked 50th in the world by THE for 2027. It is particularly known for civil and hydraulic engineering (a natural fit for a country that is largely below sea level), aerospace, architecture, industrial design, robotics and computer science. Its students build solar cars, hyperloop pods and racing cars in well-known Dream Teams.

Delft is a small, historic canal city between Rotterdam and The Hague, about an hour from Amsterdam by train. The campus lies just south of the old town, and most students cycle everywhere. Housing is the main challenge: rooms in Delft are scarce, and many students live in The Hague or Rotterdam and commute.

Indian students come to TU Delft mainly for two-year MSc programmes in computer science, electrical, mechanical, aerospace and civil engineering. Teaching is in English, projects are hands-on and the workload is high. Admission is selective: TU Delft sets a minimum bachelor's average for Indian degrees, looks for a close subject match, and some popular programmes have earlier deadlines and capped places.

Admission requirements

Undergraduate

  • Indian Class 12 (CBSE/ISC) with high marks and the required subjects, usually mathematics and physics. TU Delft publishes country-specific requirements; some bachelor's have a numerus fixus with selection.
  • Most TU Delft bachelor's are taught in Dutch; Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Applied Earth Sciences and a few others are taught in English.
  • Apply through Studielink by 15 January (numerus fixus programmes) or 1 April (others) for September 2027.

Postgraduate

  • A bachelor's degree in a closely related field. TU Delft usually expects a high average from Indian universities and checks your subjects against the programme.
  • Apply through TU Delft's application system and Studielink. For September 2027, non-EU deadlines are 15 January 2027 for selective programmes and 1 April 2027 for the rest.
  • Some programmes ask for a GRE; check the programme page.
  • Pay the application fee and upload documents by the deadline; incomplete files are not assessed.
  • Your university applies for your entry visa (MVV) and residence permit on your behalf; you show proof of funds of €1,130.77 a month (IND, 2026).

English language requirements

English requirements
Test or routeTypical requirement
IELTS Academic6.5 overall with no section below 6.0 is TU Delft's usual MSc minimum; some programmes ask for 7.0.
TOEFL iBT90 overall, with at least 21 in each section, for most programmes.
Cambridge EnglishC1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with the score TU Delft sets.
ExemptionApplicants from some countries are exempt; Indian degrees taught in English are usually not enough on their own, so plan to take a test.

Accommodation and living costs

Housing is TU Delft's biggest practical challenge. The university works with DUWO and other providers to offer a limited number of furnished rooms to new international students, but it cannot house everyone. Apply for housing as soon as you are admitted, and consider The Hague or Rotterdam, which are a short train ride away.
