About the university

The University of Sydney was founded in 1850 and is Australia's oldest university. Its main Camperdown/Darlington campus, with the sandstone Quadrangle building, sits in inner Sydney about 3 kilometres from the city centre. It is a member of the Group of Eight and is ranked 28th in the world by QS and =51st by Times Higher Education in 2027.

Sydney offers a very wide range of courses, from business, economics and law to engineering, computer science, health and the arts. Its business school is internationally accredited, and its medicine and health faculty works with major teaching hospitals such as Royal Prince Alfred, next to the main campus, and Westmead in western Sydney.

About half of Sydney's students come from overseas. The city is Australia's largest and its main centre for finance and technology, and it has a large Indian community. Rent in Sydney is the highest in Australia, which is the main trade-off to weigh against the university's reputation and location.

For Indian students, the university runs an India-specific scholarship programme for postgraduate coursework, and its master's degrees in data science, IT, engineering, commerce and public health are among the most requested. Most courses start in February or August, and fees are among the highest in the country.
