About the university
The University of Toronto began as King's College under a royal charter in 1827 and became a non-denominational provincial university in 1850. It is Canada's largest university and its most research-intensive, with discoveries ranging from insulin (1921) to foundational work in deep learning. It ranks first in Canada in the THE World University Rankings and second, behind McGill, in QS.
U of T is organised across three campuses. St. George, in downtown Toronto, is the historic main campus with the Faculty of Arts & Science, Applied Science & Engineering, the Rotman School of Management and most graduate schools. The Mississauga and Scarborough campuses, about 30 to 45 minutes away, have their own degree programmes (for example the BBA at UTM and co-op degrees at UTSC) and a more compact, suburban feel.
For Indian students the most popular choices are Computer Science, Engineering, Rotman Commerce, Data Science and life sciences at undergraduate level, and the Master of Science in Applied Computing, the Master of Engineering, the Master of Information and the Rotman MBA at postgraduate level. Admission is highly competitive and subject prerequisites are strict, so check the required Class 12 subjects for each programme.
Toronto is Canada's largest and most diverse city, with a large Indian community in Brampton, Mississauga and Scarborough. Living costs, especially rent, are high. U of T offers residence to first-year undergraduates who apply on time, and many Arts & Science residences are run by the colleges.

Admission requirements
Undergraduate
- Standard XII from CBSE, CISCE (ISC) or a state board, with the subject prerequisites for your programme (for example Calculus/Mathematics for Computer Science, Commerce and Engineering; Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry for Engineering).
- Apply through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC 105). The deadline for September 2027 is 15 January 2027; U of T recommends applying earlier.
- Some programmes ask for extra material: Engineering and Rotman Commerce use an online supplementary application, Music needs an audition and Architecture a portfolio-style submission.
- Admission is competitive; meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place.
Postgraduate
- A four-year bachelor's degree, or equivalent, with a strong academic record. U of T's School of Graduate Studies asks for at least a mid-B average (roughly 70–75%) in the final two years for most master's programmes, and many programmes are far more competitive.
- Professional master's degrees set extra requirements: the MScAC expects a strong computer science background; the MBA asks for work experience, GMAT or GRE (or a waiver) and an interview.
- Research master's degrees usually need a faculty supervisor.
- Apply online through the School of Graduate Studies; each programme sets its own deadline, often between December and February for September entry.
Documents
- Valid passport
- Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets (undergraduate)
- Degree transcripts and certificate (postgraduate)
- English test score unless exempt
- Statement of purpose or supplementary application, depending on the programme

- CV or résumé (graduate and professional programmes)
- GMAT or GRE score where required (for example the MBA)
- Proof of funds for the study permit: tuition plus at least CAD 22,895 a year for living costs for a single student (IRCC)

FAQs
How much does U of T cost for an Indian student?
For students entering in 2026-27, first-year international tuition is CAD 66,110 for most Arts & Science, Commerce and Management programmes and CAD 72,860 for Engineering. Residence with a meal plan on St. George costs about CAD 15,000–27,000 for September to April.
Is a state board Class 12 accepted?
Yes. U of T accepts CBSE, ISC and state board results, but you must have the subject prerequisites for your programme, such as Calculus/Mathematics for Computer Science.
Do I need IELTS if I studied in English in India?
Usually yes. U of T asks most applicants whose first language is not English to submit a test score unless they meet a listed exemption. Check the English language requirements page for your situation.
Which campus should I choose?
St. George is downtown and has the widest choice of programmes. UTM and UTSC are smaller suburban campuses with their own degrees, such as the UTM BBA and UTSC co-op programmes. The degree is a University of Toronto degree on all three.
Does U of T offer scholarships to international students?
The main one is the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship, which needs a school nomination. Strong applicants are also considered automatically for the CAD 7,500 University of Toronto Scholars award.
When is the deadline?
15 January 2027 for September 2027 undergraduate entry through OUAC, with supplementary applications due soon after. Graduate deadlines vary by programme and many fall between December and February.
