About the university

Kaunas University of Technology traces its roots to the University of Lithuania, founded in Kaunas in 1922, when Kaunas was the country's temporary capital. Its technical faculties became a separate polytechnic institute in 1950 and took the name Kaunas University of Technology in 1990. Today it is one of Lithuania's biggest universities, with nine faculties covering informatics, electrical and electronics engineering, mechanical engineering and design, chemical technology, civil engineering and architecture, mathematics and natural sciences, social sciences and arts, and an AACSB-accredited School of Economics and Business.

KTU is known for close links with industry. Its Santaka Valley science and technology park on campus hosts research centres and companies, and many programmes include challenge projects with partner firms, internships and a final project with a company. Several master's courses are taught in the evening in a blended format so that students can work, which suits Indian students who plan to take a part-time job.

The university is in Kaunas, Lithuania's second city, about 100 km west of Vilnius. Kaunas is a compact student city with an interwar modernist centre listed by UNESCO in 2023, and it is noticeably cheaper than Vilnius. The main campus and dormitories are in the Studentų Street area, a short bus ride from the city centre.

Indian students choose KTU mainly for informatics, artificial intelligence, electronics, mechanical engineering and business. Fees are moderate: €4,201 a year for technology bachelor's, €3,250 for business and economics bachelor's, €5,641 for technology master's and €4,690 for business master's. Bachelor's applicants need 60% in each entry subject and IELTS 5.5; master's applicants need a related degree, IELTS 6.0 and an online interview.

Campus and location

Kaunas is Lithuania's second-largest city (about 300,000 people) and a big student town. Its modernist interwar architecture was listed by UNESCO in 2023, rent is lower than in Vilnius, and Vilnius is about 1 hour 15 minutes away by train. Kaunas airport has flights to many European cities.

  • The main campus around Studentų Street brings together most faculties, the dormitories and the library.
  • Santaka Valley, KTU's science and technology park, hosts research centres and company labs used in student projects.
  • Students have access to labs such as FabLab Kaunas, 18 teaching labs in electronics, robots from ABB and FESTO, and the DigiLab digital manufacturing lab.
  • The School of Economics and Business is AACSB-accredited, and its Accounting and Auditing master's is ACCA-accredited.
  • KTU has more than 300 Erasmus+ and exchange agreements, so many students spend a semester elsewhere in Europe or Asia.
  • Several master's are taught in the evening with blended learning, which is useful if you plan to work part time.

Careers and graduate outcomes

KTU surveys its graduates each year. The latest published survey, of 2023/24 graduates, found almost all were in work, most of them already working during their studies. The sample is small and covers all graduates, not only international students, and past results are not a promise. Kaunas has fewer English-speaking jobs than Vilnius, so many international graduates look in both cities.
