About the university
Monash University was founded in 1958 and named after Sir John Monash, the engineer and First World War general. In under 70 years it has grown into Australia's largest university, with about 61,000 students, and it is a member of the Group of Eight research universities. It is ranked 31st in the world by QS and 61st by Times Higher Education in 2027.
Monash is particularly strong in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, medicine, engineering, information technology and education. Its Faculty of Information Technology offers a wide set of master's degrees, including data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and business information systems, which are among the most popular choices with Indian students.
Most students study at the large Clayton campus in Melbourne's south-east, about 20 kilometres from the city centre, which has its own shops, sports centre and residences. Business, law and design courses are largely at Caulfield, pharmacy at Parkville and nursing also at Peninsula. Monash also has a long link with India through the IITB-Monash Research Academy in Mumbai, a joint PhD programme with IIT Bombay.
For Indian students, Monash offers published Class 12 entry scores for CBSE and ISC on most bachelor's degrees, a large Indian student community and faculty scholarships for high achievers. Fees are similar to other Group of Eight universities, and the Clayton area is a little cheaper to live in than inner Melbourne.
