The city drew up its founding Constitucions in 1499, and the university was confirmed by a papal bull in 1501 and a royal privilege in 1502. It is a large public university with 18 faculties on three campuses in and around Valencia.

UV covers almost every field: medicine and health sciences, sciences, economics and business, law, humanities and engineering. Its chemistry faculty and the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMOL) are behind its English-taught master's in nanoscience and advanced materials.
