Overview

Osh State University (OshSU) is the largest state university in southern Kyrgyzstan. It began in 1939 as a teacher training institute and became a university in 1992. Its Medical Faculty opened in 1992–93, and its International Medical Faculty, which teaches General Medicine in English for foreign students, was approved on 29 August 2015.

In the 2026 state accreditation, OshSU was accredited for six years. The Embassy of India's advisory of 8 June 2026 lists its five-year and six-year General Medicine courses, Pediatrics, Dentistry and Pharmacy under 'Accredited for 6 years'. That makes it one of only four institutions with the full term.

Indian students usually join the International Medical Faculty, whose General Medicine course is five years (WDOMS and the university's 2026 fee order). India's NMC rules need at least 54 months of study followed by a 12-month internship at the same university, 66 months in all, so a five-year course cannot meet the rule on its own. Ask OshSU in writing how the 12-month internship at OshSU is added, or whether the six-year course is taught fully in English, before you pay.

Admission process

  1. Check the latest Embassy of India advisory to confirm OshSU's accreditation term before you apply.
  2. Contact the OshSU Admissions Committee (priem@oshsu.kg) or the International Medical Faculty, and check whether you must also apply through the state portal for foreign students.
  3. Ask in writing for the course length, the 12-month internship arrangement at OshSU, the medium for every year and the year-by-year fee schedule.
  4. Send scans of your Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, NEET scorecard and passport, and get your Indian certificates apostilled.

OshSU's order of 15 June 2026 sets the first-year fee for foreign students on the five-year English General Medicine course (International Medical Faculty) at 325,000 som, about USD 3,700. The fee is set in som, so the dollar amount moves with the exchange rate. The university's 2026/27 price list, approved on 30 April 2026, shows lower fees for later years, but the published scan is hard to read, so ask OshSU for a signed year-by-year schedule. The order also says the fee may change with the number of credits you take. The university does not publish hostel charges online; USD 700 a year is the indicative figure in our records. Visa, insurance, flights and food are extra. Approximate exchange rates (based on ECB reference rates, March 2026). Actual rates on your payment date will differ.

  • National Medical Commission (NMC), IndiaThe NMC does not approve foreign universities. Registration in India depends on your own course meeting the FMGL Regulations 2021, including 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship at OshSU, and on passing the licensing exam. No NMC advisory naming OshSU was found as of October 2026.

NMC eligibility depends on you, not only the university

Under the NMC's 2021 regulations your course must last at least 54 months, include a 12-month internship at the same institution, be taught in English and lead to a licence to practise in that country. Check each condition for your intake before you pay. NMC rules for Kyrgyzstan

Teaching hospitals

  • Osh Interregional Joint Clinical Hospital
  • Osh City Clinical Hospital
  • Osh Interregional Children's Clinical Hospital
  • Osh Interregional Oncology Centre
  • OshSU Medical Clinic (the university's own clinic)
  • Family Medicine Centres No. 1 and No. 2, Osh

Hostel and campus life

Most first-year international students live in the university's dormitories, which have dining rooms, washrooms and laundry rooms. OshSU lists nine dormitories with 1,773 beds in total, and a dormitory coordinator handles places. Many senior students move to shared flats nearby. Indian messes and groceries are available in Osh. Osh is more traditional and conservative than Bishkek, and fewer people speak English, so learning Russian or Kyrgyz early helps a lot, both in daily life and on the wards.

About Osh

Osh is Kyrgyzstan's second-largest city, in the Fergana Valley near the border with Uzbekistan. It is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia. Sulaiman-Too, the rocky hill in the city centre, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place of pilgrimage. The big bazaar, the Ak-Buura river and Soviet-era avenues shape the city. Both Kyrgyz and Uzbek are widely spoken, along with Russian. Summers are hot, and winters are cold but milder than in Bishkek. Flights to Bishkek take about an hour, and most international journeys to India connect through Bishkek or another hub.

Ranking

OshSU says it was placed 22nd among 73 Central Asian universities in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2026, and third in Kyrgyzstan in the national EdNet ranking 2026 with 583.60 points (OshSU news, 16 May and 18 June 2026). It is not among the five Kyrgyz universities in the QS World University Rankings 2026 (24.kg, 19 June 2025).

Scholarships

OshSU does not publish merit scholarships for international MBBS students. Fees are set by university order, and the order notes that the amount can change with the credits you take. Ask the university whether instalment payment is allowed, and treat any 'scholarship' an agent offers as a discount that must appear on university letterhead. Some Indian state governments and charitable trusts support students from low-income families; check with your state's welfare department.

Documents required

  • Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and pass certificates
  • NEET-UG scorecard
  • Passport, valid for at least one year (longer is better)
  • Passport-size photographs on a white background
  • Birth certificate
  • MEA apostille on Indian educational documents
  • Notarised Russian translation of school certificates
  • Medical certificate with HIV, hepatitis B and C and other tests the university requires
  • Health insurance policy valid in Kyrgyzstan

FAQs

Is Osh State University accredited after the 2026 reforms?

Yes. The Embassy of India's advisory of 8 June 2026 lists OshSU as accredited for six years, including its five-year and six-year General Medicine courses. Check the newest Embassy advisory before each fee payment.

Is the course five years or six?

The International Medical Faculty's English course is five years. The Medical Faculty runs a six-year course, which WDOMS lists as taught in Russian and English. For India you need at least 54 months of study and then a 12-month internship at OshSU. Ask the university in writing how this is met for the course you join.

What is the fee at OshSU?

The 2026/27 first-year fee for foreign students on the five-year English course is 325,000 som, about USD 3,700, under a university order of 15 June 2026. Later years are listed lower, but ask for a signed year-by-year schedule.

Is OshSU 'NMC approved'?

The NMC does not approve foreign universities. An OshSU graduate can register in India only if their own course meets the FMGL Regulations 2021 and they pass the licensing exam. We found no NMC advisory naming OshSU as of October 2026.

How have OshSU graduates done in the FMGE?

Secondary reports of NBEMS data show 184 of 1,135 candidates from the OshSU Medical Faculty passed in June 2025 (16.2%) and 358 of 1,529 in December 2025 (23.4%).

Is Osh safe and comfortable for Indian students?

Most students live there without trouble, and there is a large Indian community. Osh is conservative, so dress modestly in public, avoid protests, register with the Embassy on MADAD and save its 24-hour helpline.
