About the university

The University of the West of England, known as UWE Bristol, gained university status in 1992. Its roots go back to a merchant navigation school founded in Bristol in 1595, and it was Bristol Polytechnic from 1969. Today it has more than 38,000 students, which makes it one of the larger universities in the UK.

UWE is a practical, career-focused university. It is strong in engineering and aerospace, computing, architecture and the built environment, business, health and creative subjects. It runs the Bristol Robotics Laboratory with the University of Bristol, and many undergraduate degrees include an optional placement year. The university reports that 88% of its graduates were in work or further study 15 months after graduating (Graduate Outcomes 2023/24).

For Indian students, the main draws are fees of £17,500 to £18,750 a year for most master's courses, January starts on popular courses such as Data Science, Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence and Project Management, and an English waiver for students with 70% in Class XII English from CBSE, CISCE and several state boards. UWE has recruitment staff in India and Indian student societies on campus.

Bristol is a large, lively city in the south-west of England with a strong aerospace, engineering, technology and creative sector. The main Frenchay Campus is about a 15-minute bus ride from the city centre, London is about 90 minutes by train, and Bristol Airport has international connections.
