About the university

The University of Leicester opened in 1921 as a college founded as a war memorial, and received its Royal Charter as a university in 1957. Genetic fingerprinting was invented here by Sir Alec Jeffreys in 1984, and in 2012–13 a Leicester team identified the remains of King Richard III under a city car park.

Leicester is known for law, business, medicine and life sciences, space science and criminology. Its campus is just south of Leicester city centre, next to Victoria Park.

Leicester is one of the UK's most diverse cities, with a very large Indian community, Diwali celebrations on the Golden Mile that are among the biggest outside India, and easy access to Indian food and groceries. London is about an hour away by train.
