About the university

Northumbria University traces its roots to 1877. Newcastle Polytechnic was formed in 1969 by merging Rutherford College of Technology with art and commerce colleges, and it became Northumbria University in 1992. It was named UK University of the Year 2022 by Times Higher Education and Modern University of the Year 2025 by The Times and The Sunday Times.

The university describes itself as research-intensive and business-focused. It is known for computing, business, law (its Student Law Office won a Queen's Anniversary Prize), architecture and the built environment, and health. It works with employers such as Nike, IBM and the NHS.

For Indian students the main draw is lower fees than many Russell Group universities: most one-year master's in computing, engineering and business cost £21,500 in 2027/28. Several master's courses also offer a 16-month route with a January start or a two-year Advanced Practice route with a work placement.

Most courses are taught in Newcastle upon Tyne, a compact and affordable city in north-east England. The City Campus is in the centre, while Coach Lane Campus, three miles away, is home to health and life sciences. Courses at the London campus have their own fees.
