About the university
Newcastle University grew out of a School of Medicine and Surgery founded in 1834 and a College of Physical Science formed in 1871. It was part of the federal University of Durham until 1963, when it became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Today it is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive UK universities.
The university is known for medicine, engineering, computing and business. Its School of Computing sits in the Urban Sciences Building on the Newcastle Helix site, and the data science courses are delivered with support from the UK's National Innovation Centre for Data. Almost all bachelor's degrees can include a year-long work placement.
Indian students look at Newcastle for its global rankings (149th in the QS World University Rankings 2027) and a wide range of one-year master's degrees in data science, AI, computer science, business and engineering. In 2027 eligible Indian master's students are considered automatically for a £10,000 India Future Leaders Scholarship.
Newcastle upon Tyne is a compact, walkable city in north-east England. The university describes it as one of the cheapest cities to live in the UK, and the campus is in the city centre, close to shops, the Metro and the main railway station.
