About the university

La Autónoma, as it is known in Spain, was created in 1968 as part of a reform that set up new 'autonomous' universities in Madrid and Barcelona. It quickly built a reputation for research and became known for its law, sciences and medicine. Its alumni and staff include Nobel laureate Severo Ochoa, after whom a major molecular biology centre on campus is named.

Most of the university sits on one large campus at Cantoblanco in the north of the Madrid region, with its own train station on the commuter line into the city. The campus also hosts national research institutes run with the Spanish research council (CSIC), which makes UAM especially strong in physics, chemistry, biology and materials science. Medicine is taught at a separate campus next to La Paz university hospital.

UAM regularly ranks among the top three or four Spanish universities and says it is the highest-ranked university in Madrid in the THE rankings. As a public university it is inexpensive by international standards: under Madrid's fee rules, non-EU students pay roughly €6,800–€7,700 a year for a bachelor's and about €5,000 for most master's.

The main challenge for Indian students is language. UAM teaches mostly in Spanish and asks for B2 Spanish for master's study. A limited number of courses are offered in English, so most Indian applicants either target those specific programmes or spend a year reaching B2 Spanish first. We could not load UAM's course pages on our research date, so treat the course list below as a starting point and confirm each one with UAM.

  • Cantoblanco campus covers a very large green site with faculties, libraries, sports facilities, cafeterias, a pharmacy and a languages centre.
  • Several CSIC research institutes share the campus, including the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Centre and the Institute for Theoretical Physics.
  • The Medicine campus is next to La Paz university hospital in northern Madrid.
  • Cantoblanco Universidad station on the Cercanías commuter line connects to central Madrid.
  • Students in higher education in Spain can work up to 30 hours a week alongside their studies.

Careers and graduate outcomes

UAM says its graduates have high employment rates, but it does not publish figures for international students that we can compare. Madrid's job market is strongest in finance, consulting, tech and research, and most roles expect Spanish. Graduates can apply for a residence permit of up to 24 months to look for work.
