About the university

Wintec, the Waikato Institute of Technology, is a public institute of technology in Hamilton, New Zealand's fourth-largest city. It began in 1924 as Hamilton Technical College and took its present name in 2001. It teaches around 11,000 learners a year, from certificates to master's degrees.

Wintec is a practical, career-focused institution. Programmes are built with industry and lean on applied projects, placements and internships rather than theory alone. It is best known for information technology, applied management, engineering technology, nursing and health, media arts and sport science.

Indian students mostly come for the Master of Applied Information Technology, the Master of Applied Management, and one-year graduate and postgraduate diplomas in IT, business and supply chain. Fees are lower than at most New Zealand universities, many programmes start in both February and July, and Wintec applies a study grant automatically to several 2027 programmes.

Hamilton is a mid-sized, affordable city on the Waikato River, about 90 minutes' drive south of Auckland. The City Campus sits in the central business district, so housing, shops and transport are within walking distance.
