About the university

The University of Twente (UT) was founded in 1961 in Enschede, in the east of the Netherlands, to bring a technical university to a region whose textile industry was in decline. It opened to students in 1964 and has grown into one of the Netherlands' four technical universities (4TU), with a focus it calls 'high tech, human touch'.

UT combines engineering and computer science with social and behavioural sciences, so programmes such as Interaction Technology, Business Information Technology and Industrial Engineering and Management sit alongside electrical, mechanical and biomedical engineering. Research institutes cover nanotechnology, digital society, health technology and robotics, and the university has a strong record of spin-off companies.

UT is the only Dutch university with a complete campus: student housing, sports facilities, a supermarket and green woodland are all on site, between Enschede and Hengelo. Enschede is a mid-sized city near the German border, and its rents are lower than in the Randstad cities.

For Indian students, UT offers two-year technical master's at a slightly lower fee than many Dutch universities, plus one-year master's in business, psychology and communication. Many programmes accept students in February as well as September, which gives more flexibility for planning.
