About the university

Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS, Hogeschool van Amsterdam in Dutch) is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands. It was formed in 1993 from a merger of older Amsterdam colleges in trade, nautical studies, social work, nursing and economics, and now has seven faculties and close to 47,000 students.

Universities of applied sciences focus on practical, career-oriented education with projects and internships rather than pure research. AUAS organises its research around the problems of a big city, through centres of expertise such as Applied Artificial Intelligence, Urban Vitality and Creative Innovation, and it has around 250 partner institutions in 50 countries.

Most AUAS programmes are taught in Dutch. The English-taught options are a small, selective group: the AMSIB International Business bachelor's (four-year and three-year fast-track), the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, Sport Studies, the European School of Physiotherapy, and a few one-year and 18-month master's. For Indian students the draw is an Amsterdam degree at a lower fee than many research universities.

Amsterdam is the Dutch capital. Housing there is hard to find, and AUAS advises not to travel without a room arranged, so start your search early.
