About the university

The University of Wuppertal was founded in 1972 and has about 21,500 students in 9 faculties, with 113 degree programmes. It is a public university, so it charges no tuition fee, only a semester contribution of €337 that includes the Deutschlandticket.

Only a handful of Wuppertal's 113 degrees are taught in English: the master's in Computer Simulation in Science, Applied Economics, Smart Materials and Systems and the GlobalMBA, plus the bachelor's in Sustainable Chemistry. International students on these programmes get free German courses at the university's language institute.

For Indian students, the most relevant options are Computer Simulation in Science (for physics, maths and engineering graduates) and Smart Materials and Systems (for electrical engineering graduates). Both accept IELTS 6.0, and CSiS accepts six-semester (180 ECTS) bachelor's degrees.

DAAD's entry for Computer Simulation in Science estimates living costs in Wuppertal at about €600–€1,250 a month, with hall rooms from about €200.

Admission requirements

Undergraduate

  • BSc Sustainable Chemistry needs only a university entrance qualification recognised in Germany, with no GPA requirement; uni-assist checks whether your Class 12 qualifies.
  • Applicants with foreign certificates apply through uni-assist.
  • Check other bachelor's programme pages for their language of teaching and the German level required.

Postgraduate

  • A bachelor's degree of at least six semesters (180 ECTS) is accepted for Computer Simulation in Science, so a three-year degree can qualify; the GlobalMBA asks for 210 credits (or 180 plus 30).
  • CSiS also needs programming knowledge (8 ECTS), a programming self-assessment and possibly a digital entrance exam.
  • Applied Economics needs at least 100 ECTS in business and economics and a top-65% ranking or a grade of 2.5 or better.
  • Apply through uni-assist if your degree is from outside Germany.
  • Indian applicants need an APS certificate for the student visa.

Documents

  • Bachelor's degree certificate and transcript (or Class 12 certificate for the bachelor's)
  • Proof of English
  • CSiS scientific check sheet (programming self-assessment)
  • Proof of an advising session (GlobalMBA)
  • APS certificate
  • Valid passport
