About the university

The Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen was founded in 1477 and is one of Europe's oldest and best-known research universities. It covers theology, law, medicine, the natural sciences, the humanities and the social sciences.

Tübingen is a major centre for machine learning and AI research; its Machine Learning master's is run with the Max Planck Institutes for Intelligent Systems and for Biological Cybernetics. It is also strong in neuroscience, medicine and the life sciences.

For Indian students, the main draws are the English-taught MSc Machine Learning, the MSc Quantitative Data Science Methods and the MSc Neural and Behavioural Sciences. Non-EU students pay €1,500 per semester under Baden-Württemberg law. Admission is competitive, and some programmes ask for a German grade of 2.0 or better.

Tübingen is a small, historic university town on the Neckar river, south of Stuttgart. Students make up a large part of the population, so student life is lively and the town is easy to get around on foot or by bike.

    • Indian applicants need an APS certificate.

    Postgraduate

    • A bachelor's (usually 180 ECTS) in a related subject. Machine Learning and Public Policy ask for a German grade of 2.0 or better; Quantitative Data Science and Astro and Particle Physics ask for 2.5 or better.
    • Machine Learning needs at least 27 ECTS in mathematics (analysis, linear algebra, numerics or stochastics) and 18 ECTS in computer science, including algorithms and data structures.
    • Deadlines for a winter start: Neural and Behavioural Sciences 31 March; Machine Learning 30 April; Quantitative Data Science and Public Policy 31 May; Astro and Particle Physics 15 July.
    • Applications go through Tübingen's online portal (ALMA) or the programme's own process.
