About the university
The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) was formed in 2009 when the University of Karlsruhe, one of Germany's oldest technical universities (founded in 1825), merged with the Karlsruhe Research Center. The result is unusual in Germany: a university and a large national research centre in one institution, part of the Helmholtz Association.
KIT is known for engineering, computer science, physics, energy and climate research. Germany's first computer science faculty was founded here in 1972, and KIT remains one of the top places for informatics and mechanical engineering in the country. Its North Campus hosts large-scale research in energy, materials and particle physics.
Karlsruhe is a mid-sized city in the south-west, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, close to the French border and the Black Forest. It is sunny by German standards, compact and cycle-friendly, and cheaper than Munich or Stuttgart. The main South Campus is right next to the city centre and the palace gardens.
For Indian students, KIT offers English-taught master's in computing, electrical, mechanical and biomedical engineering at a moderate cost. Non-EU students pay €1,500 per semester under Baden-Württemberg law, which is still far below fees in the UK or USA. Expect a thorough check of your bachelor's subjects and grades during admission.

Admission requirements
Undergraduate
- An Indian Class 12 certificate on its own does not usually give direct entry to a German bachelor's; you typically need one or two years of a related bachelor's in India or a Studienkolleg year.
- Almost all KIT bachelor's programmes are taught in German (C1 level needed).
- Indian applicants need an APS certificate.
Postgraduate
- A bachelor's degree in a closely related subject, with enough credits in the core areas the master's lists (for example mathematics and computer science for the MSc Computer Science).
- Apply online through the KIT application portal. Deadlines for the winter semester are usually in spring or summer and differ for applicants with foreign degrees, so check your programme.
- English at B2 level, for example IELTS 6.5 with no section below 5.5 or TOEFL iBT 90.
- Indian applicants need an APS certificate for the visa.
- Admitted non-EU students pay €1,684 per semester (tuition plus semester fees) before enrolment.
Documents
- Valid passport
- APS certificate (required for Indian applicants with an Indian degree)
- Bachelor's degree certificate and transcripts (or an interim transcript with your current average if you are in your final year)
- Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets
- English test score (IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT), or a medium-of-instruction certificate where the programme accepts one
- CV in tabular format
- Statement of purpose or letter of motivation
- Letters of recommendation, where the programme asks for them
- GRE or GATE score, only for programmes that ask for it
- Course module descriptions, for programmes that check your subject credits

English language requirements
| Test or route | Typical requirement |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5 (as listed for the MSc Electrical Engineering and Information Technology). |
| TOEFL iBT | At least 90 points. |
| Other proof | A degree taught and examined only in English can count as proof of B2 level. |
| German | Not required for English-taught master's; some programmes have German-taught electives. |
Accommodation and living costs
Karlsruhe is more affordable than Munich or Stuttgart. The Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe runs student halls near the campus, but places are limited, so apply early and look for shared flats at the same time.

Campus and location
Karlsruhe is a green, fan-shaped city of about 300,000 people built around its palace. It is one of Germany's sunniest cities, with good trams and short distances, and Heidelberg, Stuttgart and Strasbourg are close by.
- The South Campus, next to the palace gardens and city centre, hosts most teaching.
- The North Campus, about 12 km away, is a large research site for energy, materials and particle physics.
- Karlsruhe has a strong IT industry cluster, useful for student jobs and internships.
- Students can buy the Deutschland semester ticket for local and regional transport.
