About the university
Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH, or TU Hamburg) is a young public technical university, founded in 1978. It has about 7,400 students, 111 professors and six schools covering civil and environmental engineering, electrical engineering and computer science, process engineering, mechanical engineering, and management sciences and technology.
TUHH is small for a German technical university, which means smaller classes and close contact with staff. It is known for process and chemical engineering, mechatronics, maritime and aviation engineering, and data science, and it works closely with Hamburg's port, aviation and logistics industries.
For Indian students the big draws are ten English-taught master's, no tuition fee for standard programmes and no application fee. TUHH does not use uni-assist: you apply directly through its own portal after a short online pre-check, and you need an APS certificate.
The campus is in Harburg, in the south of Hamburg, linked to the city centre by S-Bahn. Hamburg is one of Germany's most expensive cities, and TUHH itself warns that rooms are hard to find.

Admission requirements
Undergraduate
- TUHH's bachelor's programmes are mostly taught in German; the English-taught option is the Engineering Science bachelor's.
- An Indian Class 12 certificate on its own usually does not give direct entry to a German bachelor's; you typically need one or two years of a related bachelor's in India or a Studienkolleg year.
- Indian applicants need an APS certificate.
Postgraduate
- A bachelor's in a closely related subject with very good grades. Many programmes set minimum credits in maths and core subjects.
- Do the online pre-check first; it gives you the code you need for the online application. You can apply to only one master's per application period.
- TUHH does not use uni-assist and charges no application fee.
- Applicants with an Indian degree must upload an APS certificate with the application.
- International master's open for October only, with applications from 1 December to 1 February or 1 March. Computer Science and Electrical Engineering also have an April intake.

Accommodation and living costs
TUHH warns that Hamburg's cost of living is high and rooms are hard to find. Its Accommodation Office helps students arriving from abroad look for a room (tuhh.de/rooms). TUHH does not publish rent figures, so the room rows below are German ranges from our Germany guide; Hamburg is at the top of them.

FAQs
Is TUHH free for Indian students?
Standard programmes charge no tuition. You pay a semester contribution of about €390, which includes a public transport ticket. G-TIME and the NIT double degree charge tuition.
Do I apply through uni-assist?
No. TUHH does not use uni-assist. Do the online pre-check, then apply on TUHH's portal with your APS certificate. There is no application fee.
When should I apply for October entry?
For most international master's, from 1 December to 1 March (Mechatronics and Mechanical Engineering and Management close on 1 February). Computer Science and Electrical Engineering take applications from 1 June to 15 July.
What IELTS score do I need?
IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90. TUHH accepts only the certificates on its list, so a medium-of-instruction letter is not enough.
How much should I budget?
TUHH suggests at least €950 a month including rent and health insurance. Hamburg is expensive, so plan for more if you rent privately.
