About the university

Memorial University of Newfoundland is the public university of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It began as Memorial University College in 1925, in memory of Newfoundlanders who died in the First World War, and became a university in 1949. Its main campus is in St. John's, on Canada's Atlantic coast, with further campuses in Corner Brook, at the Marine Institute and in Labrador.

Memorial is a comprehensive research university with more than 17,000 students. It is known for engineering (especially ocean, naval and process engineering), computer science and artificial intelligence research, business, and ocean and marine studies through the Marine Institute.

For Indian students the big draws are some of the lowest international tuition fees among Canadian universities and professional master's degrees such as the Master of Data Science, the Master of Artificial Intelligence and the MASc in Software Engineering. Around 3,000 international students from over 100 countries study here.

St. John's is a small, friendly coastal city with a lower cost of living than Toronto or Vancouver, but winters are long, windy and snowy, and it is far from other large Canadian cities.
