About the university

The University of Melbourne opened in 1853 and is the oldest university in the state of Victoria. It is a public research university and a member of the Group of Eight, the alliance of Australia's leading research universities. In the 2027 rankings it sits =22nd in the world in QS and =34th in Times Higher Education, which puts it among the two or three highest-ranked universities in Australia.

Melbourne is known for the 'Melbourne Model'. Most students first take a broad three-year bachelor's degree, such as Arts, Commerce, Science, Design, Biomedicine or Music, and then move on to a professional graduate degree in fields like engineering, law, medicine, architecture or teaching. For Indian students this means many popular professional programmes, including engineering, are offered mainly at master's level, often as two- or three-year degrees.

The main campus is in Parkville, a short tram ride north of the city centre, next to hospitals and research institutes that form one of the largest biomedical precincts in the southern hemisphere. The Faculty of Fine Arts and Music is at Southbank, and agriculture, veterinary and environmental courses use the Werribee, Dookie, Burnley and Creswick campuses.

International students make up more than half of the student body, and Melbourne has one of Australia's largest Indian communities, so Indian food, festivals and student societies are easy to find. Courses are demanding and fees are among the highest in Australia, so the university suits students with strong academic records who want a research-led degree and are comfortable with a big-city cost of living.

Admission requirements

Undergraduate

  • Bachelor's entry is based on your Class 12 results from CBSE, CISCE (ISC) or a state board. Each degree publishes its minimum score for Indian qualifications on its entry requirements page.
  • Most bachelor's degrees last 3 years and start in February. Professional fields such as engineering, law and medicine are mainly studied later at graduate level.
  • Prerequisite subjects apply to some degrees, for example mathematics for Commerce, Science and Biomedicine.
  • If your Class 12 marks are below the direct-entry level, the Trinity College Foundation Studies programme is the university's own pathway.
  • Apply online directly to the university or through an authorised representative.

Postgraduate

  • Graduate courses ask for a bachelor's degree in a related field with a minimum weighted average, set course by course. Some, such as engineering, accept degrees in other fields but then take 3 years.
  • Your Indian degree is assessed for equivalence by the university. Check the course page for its minimum average and any prerequisite subjects.
  • The Master of Business Analytics and other Melbourne Business School courses run on their own calendars and may need work experience or an interview.
  • Apply online. Most courses have intakes in March and July, and popular courses can close early.
  • Accept your offer and pay the first-semester tuition deposit to receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for the student visa.

Documents
