PTE Core for Canada: who needs it, and who needs PTE Academic instead
PTE Core is a general English test accepted by Canada for some immigration programmes. Why it is usually not the right test for university admission.

Pearson offers two main computer-based English tests: PTE Academic and PTE Core. The names are close and both are taken at the same test centres, so students sometimes book one when they need the other. Here is how to tell them apart.
What PTE Core is
PTE Core is a general English test. It measures speaking, writing, reading and listening in everyday and workplace situations. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) accepts it for certain economic immigration programmes, which is why most people who take it are planning to work or settle in Canada.
What PTE Academic is
PTE Academic measures English in an academic setting and is accepted by many universities and colleges around the world, as well as by several governments for study and other visas. If you are applying to a college or university, PTE Academic is the version most institutions list.
Who usually needs PTE Core
- People applying for permanent residence through an economic programme that asks for a general English test.
- Some applicants for other Canadian immigration programmes that list PTE Core among accepted tests.
Who usually needs PTE Academic
- Students applying to Canadian colleges and universities that accept PTE Academic.
- Students applying to universities in other countries that accept PTE Academic.
A study permit application is assessed together with your admission. Your college sets the English requirement for admission, so follow the college's list of accepted tests first.
How to check before booking
- For study, read the English language requirements page of your college or university. Note whether it names PTE Academic, and the minimum score.
- For immigration, read IRCC's page on language tests for your programme. It lists the approved tests and how scores convert to Canadian Language Benchmarks.
- If your plan includes both study now and immigration later, remember the two may need different tests at different times. A result is also valid only for a set period.
A common scenario
A student who plans a diploma at a Canadian college and hopes to settle in Canada later may need PTE Academic now, for admission, and a general test such as PTE Core several years later, for permanent residence. Test results expire, so a score taken today will not normally still be valid by then. Plan each test for the purpose and the date it is needed.
Mistakes to avoid
- Booking PTE Core because a friend used it for immigration, when your college asks for PTE Academic.
- Assuming a score that meets the college's minimum also meets an immigration programme's minimum. They are set separately and expressed differently.
- Booking without checking that the name on your booking matches your passport exactly.
Format and preparation
Both tests are taken on computer and scored by Pearson's automated system, with results usually available within a few days. Several question types are shared, but the content and some tasks differ, so practise with official material for the test you are actually taking.
If you are unsure which one you need, bring your college offer or your immigration plan to a free counselling session and we will check it with you. Bookings are made through Pearson's official website.
