History, Affiliations and Rankings The University of Calgary, formerly known as Alberta Normal School (later to become the Werklund School of Education) opened its doors in 1906, providing a steady stream of educators to a new province eager to grow and advance quickly. Their efforts were finally recognised on April 29, 1966, when it was granted autonomy. From there, growth was rapid and furious, as a new campus was built and innovative educators from around the world arrived in Calgary, Canada. All of the University of Calgary's undergraduate engineering programs are accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. They are academically affiliated with the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), International Association of Universities (IAU), and Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate (CUSID) and the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE).
