History of Massey University

Massey University started out as the New Zealand Agricultural College which was established in 1926 as the 6th College of the University of New Zealand and in 1927 it was renamed the Massey Agricultural College. Four years after Massey opened doors for its first students, the first female student enrolled to study poultry farming. It was after the years of World War II and the Great Depression that the University witnessed massive expansion and a series of consolidations, including that with the Victoria University of Wellington, after which it acquired its present form as Massey University. Following this, it was accorded University status in 1964 and two years hence, its name changed to Massey University. Beginning from a small agricultural college in Palmerston North, the University has grown to become New Zealand's largest residential university with locations across Auckland and Wellington. QS World University Rankings ranks Massey University at #284, while the Times Higher Education has given it a global rank in the bracket #601-800 and US News & World Report ranks Massey University at #556 in the Best Global Universities category for the year 2022.
